GENERATOR INTERLOCK INSTALLATION IN CONNECTICUT

Power Your Home Safely from a Portable Generator.

Already own a portable generator? A generator inlet and interlock let you power your furnace, well pump, refrigerator, and lights through your electrical panel during an outage, with no extension cords running through windows. Limitless Electric installs complete interlock setups with permits and inspections handled for you.

How a Generator Interlock Works

A generator interlock is a sliding plate installed on your electrical panel. It physically prevents your main breaker and your generator breaker from being on at the same time.

That matters because sending generator power into your home while it’s still connected to the utility lines, called backfeeding, can damage equipment and seriously injure utility workers repairing the lines. The interlock makes that impossible.

We also install a weatherproof power inlet on the outside of your home. During an outage, you plug your generator into the inlet with a properly rated cord, switch the interlock, and choose which circuits to run.

Is an Interlock Right for Your Home?

An interlock is a great fit if:

  • You already own a portable generator, or plan to buy one
  • You want to keep the heat, well pump, sump pump, and refrigerator running during outages
  • You’re tired of running extension cords through doors and windows
  • You want backup power at a lower cost than a standby generator
  • You’re comfortable starting the generator and switching over manually when the power goes out

If you’d rather have backup power that starts automatically, a standby generator may be a better fit. We’ll explain both options.

How Much Does a Generator Interlock Cost?

A generator interlock is usually the most affordable way to connect backup power to your home. Pricing depends on your panel type, where the inlet goes, the distance between the panel and the inlet, and your generator’s size.

Some older panels don’t have an interlock kit available. In that case, we’ll explain alternatives, such as a manual transfer switch or a panel replacement.

You’ll get upfront pricing before any work begins, and financing through Wisetack is available on every quote. Learn about financing.

Frequently Asked Generator Interlock Questions

What is a generator interlock?

It’s a device installed on your electrical panel that prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. That lets you safely power your home’s circuits from a portable generator through an outdoor inlet.

Yes, when it’s a kit listed for your panel and installed by a licensed electrician with a permit. It prevents backfeeding, which protects your equipment and the utility workers repairing the lines.

No. Using a “suicide cord” to backfeed through an outlet is dangerous and illegal. It can energize the utility lines and seriously injure lineworkers, and the exposed prongs can shock you. An interlock and inlet are the safe way to do it.

That depends on your generator’s wattage. Most homeowners prioritize the furnace or boiler, well pump, sump pump, refrigerator, and some lights and outlets. We’ll help you plan which circuits to run and label them for you.

Both are safe when installed correctly. An interlock is usually the more affordable option and lets you use any circuit in your panel. A manual transfer switch powers a pre-selected set of circuits. We’ll recommend what fits your panel and budget.

Not usually. Interlock kits are available for most panels. If yours is too old or no kit exists for it, we’ll explain the alternatives.

Always outdoors, well away from doors, windows, and vents, because generators produce deadly carbon monoxide. We place the inlet so you can follow that rule easily.

Most interlock installations are completed during a single visit, including the inlet, breaker, and wiring.
